HTML: An Overview Of The Basics

What exactly is HTML?

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language.

Whee. Impressive. Not.

All you really need to know about HTML is that it is a computer language that allows you to format pages for display on the world wide web. The important part of that statement is the word 'format', because for all intents and purposes HTML is simply a text and image formatting language.

HTML allows you to decide where and how you want to display information and graphics on a page to be shown in a browser. That's it. That's all there is to it. There is no magic formula to it, you don't need to be a programmer to write in HTML, you don't need any special programs to code in HTML. ANYONE can write HTML pages. YOU can write HTML.

Pretty cool, huh?

All that HTML really is, is a set of instructions that is read by a viewer's browser. The browser then sets up the page according to the instructions contained in the web page code. The real trick is making sure you have the code written correctly so that the page displays correctly.

Here are some of the Universal Truth's of HTML:

  • Writing HTML code is NOT rocket science. Anyone can do it
  • Everyone has their own style, whether they know it or not
  • No matter how good you get, someone will always be better
  • It doesn't matter if someone is better if your page is your best effort
  • No matter what you do, someone will hate your page
  • Strive to make your page reflect who and what you are
  • Treat your visitors well and they will come back with friends

Now that I have tantalized you a little, jump right in and move on to the next tutorial! There really is no time like the present. The sooner you get the basics under your belt the sooner you will be amazing friends and family with your coding skills! That is what these tutorials are all about.

    Good Luck with your coding!
